Woolworth Walk

Diana Gillispie

I have been a professional ceramicist for 37 years. My work includes both functional pottery and handmade decorative tile.

I began my career as a functional porcelain potter in 1978. At graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design, I switched to using a red earthenware clay with a maiolica glaze decoration. In 1996, I started Asheville Tileworks in the River Arts District, and later relocated my studio to our property in the Kenilworth neighborhood.
Asheville Tileworks produces handmade tile in the arts and crafts tradition with designs from historic and nature-inspired motifs. Initially the tile designs were conceived and executed in a shallow graphic style whereby the red clay on the raised designs was left unglazed and contrasted with a glazed background. Most recently I have developed a series of deep relief landscape designs depicting scenes around Western North Carolina. The minute detail on the carving and the graphic qualities of the surfaces are highlighted by finishing with an oxide wash.

A few years ago I decided to balance tile design and production with a return to my roots in functional pottery and maiolica. The new pots, and some tiles, are hand-painted in a fresh, spontaneous and colorful style. All of my work is made for everyday use.
