Kathy Kmonicek has been working in the field of photojournalism as a photographer and photo editor for over 30 years. She is currently a freelance photographer now working in Western North Carolina shooting news, portraits, events and real estate for publications and commercial businesses. She has also begun a whole new photographic venue, capturing the beautiful lake and mountain landscapes of the area. Her career spans coverage of major sports events that include: US Open Golf, US Open Tennis, Super Bowls, MLB World Series, NYC Marathons, NBA and NHL Championship Games as well as major news events that include: World Trade Center coverage, plane crashes, presidential elections, hurricanes, floods, fires and more.

For close to 20 years, Kmonicek was a staff photographer and photography editor at Newsday, one of the nation's largest Pulitzer Prize winning daily newspapers located in Long Island, NY. Kmonicek was one of two photographers on Newsday's Breast Cancer Series that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the winner of Newsday's Publisher's Award. Kmonicek was also a member of the Newsday photo staff nominated as Pulitzer Prize finalists for Spot News Photography for coverage of the crash of Avianca Flight 52.

Kmonicek's work has been recognized by the New York Newspaper Publishers Association, The Associated Press, The Deadline Club, National Headliner Award, Newswomen's Club of New York, National Press Photographer's Association, New York Press Photographer's Association and the Press Club of Long Island.

In addition to her career as a photographer, Kmonicek has taught Photojournalism as an Adjunct Professor at various Universities that include: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Adelphi University, LIU Post, Hofstra University and Columbia University.

Kmonicek holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography from LIU Post and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art & Speech Communications from SUNY Oneonta.
