With camera in hand almost everywhere he goes, photographer Carter Mitchell
Jr. captures an offbeat view of the Asheville and surrounding towns. He
sort of stumbled into photography, getting his first camera in late 2009.
But he soon learned that he had a knack for seeing beauty where others
might overlook it.
"I gravitate toward anything that shows history or character. The first
thing I remember taking pictures of was this old rusted trailer," he said.
"It was in a bad neighborhood and the people who lived there must have
thought I was crazy."
Since 2011, he has been selling his pictures and his business has grown
through experimentation and a passion for his work. For inspiration, the
self-taught photographer loves to travel to keep things fresh but downtown
Asheville seems to provide an endless source of content and amusement for
him. “At first photographing Asheville was the last thing I was interested
in," says Mitchell. "But I have grown a new appreciation for my home town."
CMJR. Photography sells at both the Woolworth Walk and the Kress Emporium,
as well as doing some consignment and wholesale with other local
businesses. Carter is also a regular vendor at the Portico Market at the
Grove Arcade and has a busy Instagram account that boasts 1050 followers.
His Instagram name is cmjr.
