Woolworth Walk

MariLou Solares

I am a Cuban B. C. (Before Castro), having been born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. My art education began in Puerto Rico at age 10 (1967) with Professor Antonio Gantes. During my Middle & High School years (1970-1975) my teacher and mentor was Artist Jorge Rechani. I attended The Art Student's League in Old San Juan, and Casa Candina Ceramics Studio in Condado, Puerto Rico. I received an Associates in Art degree (1976) from MDCC Community College, Miami, Fl., and a Bachelor in Fine Arts (1978) from Southampton College, of Long Island University. From 1979 to 2013, I lived and worked to provide my children an education and to fulfill my professional goals. I had the opportunity to live in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Florida. Throughout this period I participated in several Plein Air Competitions (Deering Estate, Fl.), Art Projects (Sr. Richards Chapel Project, Palmetto Bay Florida.) and also a series of oil paintings now at homes in: Asheville, Florida, Maryland, California, New York & Puerto Rico. I transferred to Asheville in 2014 where I have been living the Professional Artist life. Currently I have a Series of Painted Bird Houses for sale at Woolworth's Walk in downtown Asheville. For these 2016 Summer months I have been educating myself about the History of Buddhism and it's practice. I created a series of Oil and Watercolor Paintings which I donated to Asheville Community Yoga, at Woodfin to help raise funds for their expansion. My personal Interest are: faith, fine arts and crafts, music, theatre, yoga, the ocean, our mountains, swimming, fishing, sailing, tubing, reading, doing puzzles, travels to The National Parks and a few Caribbean Islands. This is my testimonial: "During moments of inspiration my mind floats/travels into my life: good and bad situations, the earth, feelings of love, gratitude, deception, faith and courage. Each piece of my work is simply a gift from my soul to the recipiens".
