I am a mother of 5 children and for over 30 years, I have painted historical signs, small-craft items & numerous brush-on-canvas pieces part-time to supplement my income as a professional hair stylist for senior citizens.
Today, my work in wire stems from a long-held desire to create sculptural pieces. I transform recycled aluminum wire in ways that reflect the beauty of the trees native to the mountains of Western North Carolina. I interact with the wire, building my trees 2-3 strands at a time. With multiple twisting and forming techniques, I create the look of swirling bark, gnarly roots, knots and growing branches. As my skills have grown, I have begun to incorporate other natural elements into my work, such as vines, branches and bird’s nests.
My sculptures come from memories of raising my family; a kite caught in a tree, apple-picking or one of my kids swinging in the old maple. Each one is a reminder of a time, an event or a place I carry with me. I hope they stir some happy memories for you as well.
