Woolworth Walk

Sylvia McCollum

My jewelry designs express universal themes of strength, hope, joy, boldness and humor by incorporating timeless symbols within the shapes, textures, accents and stones to evoke and compliment the passions of the wearer.

Many of my designs incorporate circles.  As a two-time breast cancer survivor, I use circles in my designs to symbolize life, endless hope and courage. After my first diagnosis in 2009, I developed Circles of Hope. In 2015 when I was diagnosed again , I developed Circles of  Hope and Hearts of Love.  My latest collection is called Circles of Hope and Faces of Courage.  This collection uses carved buffalo bone as faces paired with various stones, which are chosen because of the metaphysical properties the stones possess. I use a variety of processes, stones, texture and patinas to get the perfect design for that special treasure for the wearer.

All my work is fabricated in my studio in the Asheville, NC area. It is completely fabricated by me with minor assistance from my two Shi Tzu girls, Luci Moon and Zoey. They provide comedy, emotional support and inspiration. I use a variety of silver and gold to transform my thoughts into wearable art. I also use a variety of stones, textures and patinas to obtain just the design for that special treasure. I have learned the skills of design and metalsmithing from classes that I have taken all over the United States. My stones come from many wonderful stone cutters, most purchased when I make my yearly buying trip to the International Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona.

I love the process of creating a vision of a special piece of wearable art with a unique meaning, then using my skills as a silversmith to create the piece from the raw elements. In doing so it is my hope that the owner will draw from my piece all the joy, meaning and passion I put into creating it.
