F.W. Woolworth, Lancaster, Pennsylvania "Woolworth 5¢ Store," built in 1878, replaced Utica, New York's "Great 5$ Store" that closed after being in business for only three months. F.W. Woolworth was twenty-seven years old when he chose Lancaster, Pennsylvania for its busy location. The new store was an immediate success, making a profit of $127 on opening day! In 1879, after opening stores in Harrisburg and Scranton, the name was changed to "Woolworth's 5 & 10." Woolworth's catered to the working class. Mr. Woolworth had three store policies: catering to customers who were willing to pay cash, offering the best bargains possible, and openly displaying all wares. He became famous for buying bulk chocolate candy and selling it by the piece. By 1895, F.W. Woolworth, known as the "merchant prince," had achieved $1,000,000 in sales; by 1900, sales exceeded $5,000,000. In 1911, the corporation owned 3,000 stores. This number reduced to 400 before the last Woolworth's closed in July of 1997. The Old F.W. Woolworth Building This building was restored in 2001 and proudly received two Griffin Awards for "historical appropriateness". Presently, it boasts the largest art gallery in Asheville, featuring many local artists. |

Woolworth's Lunch Counter Waitress Geneva Tisdale was working that day, in1960, when four young black men sat down at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, NC, and asked to be served. The management refused, and protests ensued. Six months of negotiations and sit-ins later, the Woolworth's management changed its policy and chose Geneva Tisdale and two of her co-workers to be the first African-Americans to eat at the lunch counter at which they worked. |
