All of my successful photographs have been surprises in one way or another. They happen when I'm able to go out into the world and to be open to the possibilities and mysteries of nature. If I'm relaxed and aware, the images will come. When they do come, I "see" the finished print in my mind's eye before I ever set up the camera. I've found that it I don't have that little epiphany, I may make a photograph that is technically excellent, but it will be without life. A photograph without the spark that comes from that moment of inspiration is little better than a snapshot. It's almost like seeing in the dark. The things you see best are those you don't look at directly. For me there is a joy in that moment of realization that is difficult to put into words. It's a flash of certainty that arrives when the mind and spirit are prepared to receive it. My hope is that somehow the finished print will match my inner vision, and convey what I was feeling when I made the exposure. If I do my work well, the viewer will feel that joy reflected in the photograph, and perhaps be moved by the beauty of the world that is in our keeping. |
