Stephen St.Claire was born and raised in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles, California, graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Working with oil paint since he was a child, he has spent most of his adult life exploring different facets of art and design, winning numerous international awards for his work.
“I grew up painting mostly landscapes and still life, but somewhere around 2001, I began experimenting with painting on metallic leaf, and a new painting genre was born. This technique is now called Dialuminism (”light passing through”) and embeds metal leaf and oil paint within layers of solar protective resins. Light reflects off the metal background layer, passes through the layers of paint and then is refracted by the layers of clear resin (which act as a sort of clear lense, fused to the surface of the painting). The result is a painting that is basically back-lit, which creates very intense color. Light plays off some areas and casts shadows beneath others, creating a dimensional painting that changes in appearance depending upon where the viewer is standing in relation to the light source.
Joy St.Claire was born and raised in rural San Diego County in Southern California, graduating from UCLA with a biochemistry major and art minor. Raising four nearly perfect children and assisting her artist/husband Stephen St.Claire in all facets of his work, she began using the technique Stephen developed and applying it to her own areas of interest: flowers and local landscapes. She is well known locally for her depictions of the French Broad River in all its various seasons.
St.Claire Art's home base is their open studio in the heart of the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina, where they happily paint and talk to visitors five days a week.
