Sumner Smith's path to working as an artist is more circuitous than most, including stints as a corporate attorney, competitive equestrienne and family farmer growing cut flowers for Ashevilleʼs City Market. It was during her flower farming days that she began pressing her flowers to preserve their beauty beyond the growing season. After many fortunate (and unfortunate!) experiments, Sumner discovered the art of candle making. Today, Sumner incorporates pressed botanicals into her 100% beeswax lanterns, lamps, candles and jewelry. She enjoys working with a sustainable and all-natural medium such as beeswax, and producing functional yet one-of-a-kind works of art. All of Sumnerʼs work is hand-crafted in Asheville, North Carolina and intended to evoke the flowers of Spotted Dog Farm and the varied botanical landscape of Western North Carolina.
